In a major move to combat deforestation and climate change, the Brazilian state of Piauí has partnered with global natural capital platform Silvania to launch a jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD) program.

The agreement, signed with Investe Piauí and announced on Tuesday, will enable the state to generate and sell carbon credits through forest protection initiatives, backed by Silvania’s $500 million investment commitment.

Silvania will provide upfront financing to help Piauí earn certification under the ART TREES standard, ensuring high-integrity carbon credits. The company will also act as the exclusive buyer of these credits.

Program development will be led by Geonoma, a firm with over 15 years of experience in ecological restoration and monitoring. Brazilian environmental company Systemica will contribute advanced technical support.

Following the example of the state of Tocantins, which launched a similar program, Piauí selected Silvania and Systemica through a competitive public process.

Projections suggest that if Piauí reduces deforestation by 10% annually, it could generate over 20 million carbon credits by 2030.

“This agreement represents a transformative step for Piauí in our fight against deforestation and climate change,” said Governor Rafael Fonteles.

The program aims to benefit local communities, scale sustainable agriculture, and align with Silvania’s Race to Belém campaign to unlock private investment ahead of COP30.

Silvania is also working with other Brazilian states, including Maranhão, to expand forest protection efforts.

Situated at the edge of the Amazon and within Brazil’s agricultural frontier, Piauí is strategically placed to balance conservation with development.

The Geneva agreement underscores a growing trend of public-private collaboration to deliver climate action and sustainable growth.

“This partnership… enables us to access cutting-edge tools and resources to tackle deforestation,” added Victor Hugo de Almeida, President of Investe Piauí.
