Boomitra’s East Africa Grassland Restoration Project has officially been registered under the Verra Verified Carbon Standard, marking the first Kenya-based project to be registered under the VM0042 methodology.
This milestone comes after the successful registration of Boomitra’s East Africa Carbon Farming Project earlier this year, turning the company into the only one on the market to have achieved Verra registrations for soil carbon projects in both croplands and grasslands in Kenya.
Spanning across 22,311 acres of land, the East Africa Grassland Restoration Project helps Kenyan pastors adopt regenerative grazing on semi-arid grasslands affected by overgrazing, invasive species, and changing rainfall patterns.
Through Boomitra’s project, local communities engage in restoring degraded soils, improving the forage productivity, enhancing the biodiversity, and building climate change resilience—steps that are critical for the long-term ecosystem recovery in these dryland regions.
Besides unlocking an additional income stream for herders, the project also helps boost the soil carbon storage capacity, contributing to enhanced atmospheric CO2 removal.
To monitor the soil carbon stocks, Boomitra utilizes a Verra-approved MRV system that enables remote tracking via satellite and AI.
This remote MRV system dramatically reduces the need for expensive soil sampling, making Boomitra’s carbon removal approach cost-effective and scalable, particularly in large landscapes that are hard to access.
According to Boomitra, in the slated 20-year crediting period, this project will be able to remove 93,371 tonnes of CO2e from the atmosphere.

Boomitra Founder & CEO Aadith Moorthy commented, “Our work in East Africa reflects what’s possible when climate innovation meets pastoralist leadership. By combining AI-powered monitoring with community-driven grazing practices, we’re restoring rangelands and unlocking meaningful carbon finance for dryland regions.”
With five projects now registered across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Boomitra’s efforts have resulted in the removal of 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere so far.
Improving the livelihoods of more than 100,000 farmers, the company is making steady strides on its mission of spreading knowledge and skills on sustainable land management that will recarbonize the soils to unlock gigaton CO2 removal levels.
