India-based soil carbon innovator Boomitra is expanding its regenerative agriculture and carbon finance efforts to Costa Rica, aiming to sequester nearly 170,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, according to a statement on Tuesday.
The company will initially implement sustainable grazing practices across 250,000 acres of ranchland, with plans to scale up to 1 million acres.
Costa Rica, renowned for its environmental leadership and winner of the 2021 Earthshot Prize for reforestation, is an ideal partner for Boomitra with its AI-driven carbon monitoring and financing solutions.
The Costa Rica Grassland Restoration Project aims to provide ranchers with access to verified carbon credits, creating new income streams while restoring degraded land.

Livestock farming covers over a third of Costa Rica’s land and employs 12% of its rural workforce.
However, traditional grazing methods have contributed to soil degradation and nearly a quarter of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Regenerative agriculture—using techniques such as rotational grazing and silvopastoral systems—can reverse this trend by enhancing soil health, water retention, and biodiversity.
Financial and technical barriers often prevent farmers from adopting sustainable practices.
Boomitra’s technology, the first AI and remote sensing-based soil carbon MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) system approved by Verra, minimizes costly manual sampling, while maximizing returns for participating ranchers.
Key partners include local livestock association CORFOGA, which promotes sustainable cattle ranching, and Plan21, a nonprofit focused on environmental development.
Together with Boomitra, they will support the transition to climate-smart grazing.
By enabling access to carbon finance, we can support farmers, restore ecosystems, and contribute meaningfully to global climate goals, said Aadith Moorthy, CEO of Boomitra.
The project in Costa Rica builds on Boomitra’s global impact, including initiatives in Mexico, India, and East Africa.
