Boomitra has marked momentous progress in the field of soil carbon dioxide removal (CDR) by securing Verra approval for its landmark Northern Mexico Grassland Restoration Project, which became the first North American initiative to be certified under the VM0042 methodology and the largest one on a global scale.

This achievement was coupled with the eye-catching issuance of 3.03 million soil carbon credits, which were made available to buyers interested in high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

Following the Verra certification, the project is also undergoing a Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) evaluation, which will validate its environmental and social benefits.

The Northern Mexico Grassland Restoration Project helps reverse desertification and restores key wildlife habitats on a territory of 4 million acres across the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts.

At this location, the project partners with farmers, supporting them in the adoption of regenerative practices including rotational grazing, in which ranchers strategically move cattle between paddocks, giving degraded lands extended recovery periods.

The record credit issuance represents 3+ million tonnes of CO2e removed from the atmosphere between 2019 and 2022 through regenerative grazing practices.

What started out as an initiative covering 1.4 million acres of land grew into a vast undertaking that currently works with a network of 158 ranchers, with plans for further expansions in the future.

By employing a scalable and cost-efficient approach to soil carbon measurement, Boomitra has been able to unlock a revenue stream for partnering farmers, through which ranchers and their local communities receive at least 75% of the gross carbon revenue.

This approach, the company highlights, helps address systemic challenges that have been excluding Global South communities from carbon market participation, helping farmers tap into this opportunity without requiring upfront costs, internet access, or specialized equipment.

For Boomitra, the Verra project approval and groundbreaking credit issuance further fuel the company’s momentum created by prepurchase agreements secured with brands like Deloitte NSE, DP World, Ethereum Climate Platform, and Restoration Climate, as well as a partnership with the Government of Singapore under which Boomitra agreed to supply 625,000 Article 6 carbon credits toward the country’s NDC target.

With the successful certification under the rigorous VM0042 methodology, Boomitra has demonstrated that soil CDR can scale rapidly and in line with the highest integrity standards, paving the way for other soil carbon projects around the globe.
