Carbon removal technology developer BluSky has finalized an $8.3 million deal with Associated Energy Developers (AED) for the expansion of the AR1 biochar facility in Arkansas.
Through this collaboration, the expansion of the facility is expected to wrap up by the end of January 2026. Once fully operational, it is projected to be able to produce approximately 40,000 tons of biochar annually.
The agreement between BluSky and AED saw an innovative model of financing that the two companies believe will serve as a blueprint for similar projects in the future.
Namely, under their definitive agreement, a project company called WARB1 LLC purchased BluSky’s AR1 facility for more than $8.3 million.
This move provided BluSky with immediate liquidity and a structured commissioning payment schedule, leaving it exclusively in charge of operations and maintenance (O&M) services.
With the financing model of this deal, BluSky will be able to deploy multiple Vulcan Heavy pyrolysis units at the AR1 biochar site while leveraging seller financing at a competitive interest rate of 1.99%.
The Vulcan Heavy pyrolysis technology boasts a design that enables it to produce large quantities of high-quality biochar, collect crude bio-oil, and capture biosyngas for power generation.
Successfully commissioned in January 2024, this system is projected to have the ability to convert 5 tonnes of organic waste into biochar and bioenergy every hour.

This novel technology plays a vital role in BluSky’s facility complex called Kiloplex, which includes Vulcan Heavy systems for pyrolysis, along with the company’s carbon mineralization solution called Medusa and a direct air capture (DAC) system called Kronos.
Located in Warren, Arkansas, the AR1 biochar facility presents a suitable deployment spot, situated near large-scale sources of clean biomass with access to agricultural end-users, eliminating the need for costly biochar transportation.
Towards the end of 2024, BluSky launched biochar production at this site, working on a $105 million, ten-year supply agreement.
The newly announced deal with AED will also contribute towards this target, and the two partners believe the same financing model could also be applied towards BluSky’s proposed AR2 project.
