Black & Veatch, a global leader in engineering and infrastructure solutions, has been commissioned to evaluate the feasibility of deploying carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology at coal-fired power plants in Vietnam.
This initiative is aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the Southeast Asian country, the Kansas-based company announced on Monday.
The Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) has engaged Black & Veatch to study carbon reduction technologies at three coal-fired power plants, owned by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam or PVN), with a capacity of 2 x 600 megawatts (MW) each.
The facilities in question are Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant in Ha Tinh Province, Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant in Hau Giang Province, and Thai Binh 2 Thermal Power Plant in Thai Binh Province.
According to Dr. Nguyen Huu Luong, a senior expert at VPI, this is the first carbon capture study conducted on coal-fired power plants in Vietnam, and its findings will be crucial in shaping the national CCUS roadmap and legal framework.
The study will assess the current landscape of carbon capture technology and evaluate the practicality of applying it to flue gas emissions from the power plants.

Narsingh Chaudhary, president of Black & Veatch’s Asia Pacific and India business, noted that deploying advanced technologies such as CCUS could greatly assist power producers and heavy industries in the region in reducing emissions.
As part of the front-end loading (FEL) study, Black & Veatch will conduct a comprehensive assessment of carbon capture technologies, propose suitable options for each plant, and develop preliminary designs for integrating the carbon capture units.
The company will also devise strategies for connecting these units to the existing power plants.

Vietnam’s National Energy Masterplan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, encourages the use of CCUS technologies to achieve a carbon capture capacity of up to 6 million metric tons per year by 2050.
With over 30 years of experience in carbon capture technology, Black & Veatch is well-positioned to support Vietnam in this initiative.
The company, which is 100% employee-owned, specializes in the analysis, design, and implementation of CO2 capture and utilization systems and has expertise in various applications, including methanol and synthetic natural gas production.
