Women-led carbon removal company BIOSORRA has secured $3.5 million in seed funding that will power the scaling of its biochar operations in Kenya.

Led by atmosfair and Fondo Nimbus, the funding round will enable the expansion of BIOSORRA’s reach in the tropics, where it works on facilitating the implementation of sustainable agriculture that results in soil benefits and atmospheric CO2 removal.

The funding will allow the company to support more Kenyan farmers in adopting sustainable land stewardship, while also dedicating efforts to improve the research and development, as well as the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of its biochar operations, ensuring transparency and high-quality carbon removal results.

For BIOSORRA, this successful funding round adds to the strong momentum the company has been experiencing this year.

Since the beginning of 2025, BIOSORRA has become the first industrial company active in Kenya to secure the coveted International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA) certification for carbon removal credits, validating their high-quality, durable CO2 removal impact.

The company has also shared that by now, it has managed to achieve a 24/7 production uptime, with its tech systems being fully operational for over a year, and its operations contributing towards more than 20 biochar use cases that resulted in meaningful soil enhancement and atmospheric CO2 removal.

Ines Serra Baucells, CEO and co-founder of BIOSORRA, believes that this milestone funding reflects the recognition of the company’s approach that uses tropical crop residues to offer one of the most premium biochar-to-carbon removal ratios on the market.

The company’s potential has previously garnered the support from many industry heavyweights, including XPRIZE Carbon Removal, Bezos Earth Fund, MIT Solve, and Mulago Foundation.

On behalf of Fondo Nimbus, CEO Josephine Korijn shared, “We see a huge potential in BIOSORRA as one of the leaders in emerging market biochar production and look forward to supporting them in their expansion.”

atmosfair CTO Philipp Neff added that they are happy to implement this project together with BIOSORRA, stating,

“The usage of sustainable biomass waste will produce biochar, which sequesters carbon, benefits smallholder farmers, and contributes to food security while also supplying clean energy to ensure the operations self-sustainability and help decarbonize the energy matrix.”
