BASF And Forestal Pave Way For E-Methanol Via CO2 Capture - Carbon Herald

Spanish shipping and chemicals company Forestal del Atlántico has partnered with German chemical giant BASF in a new early disclosure agreement (EDA) aimed at accelerating the production of e-methanol (eMeOH) through innovative carbon capture solutions.

As part of this agreement, BASF will supply its cutting-edge OASE blue gas technology to the Triskelion project, located in Galicia, Spain. 

This technology, designed to extract carbon dioxide (CO2) from flue gases, is noted for its energy efficiency, minimal solvent loss, and adaptable operational range.

The CO2 collected from the exhaust gases of power-generating turbines will be converted into e-methanol by reacting with renewable hydrogen. This e-methanol will be used in sectors such as shipping and chemicals.

BASF has stated that this collaboration will contribute valuable input to the front-end engineering design (FEED) process, which will be developed by a third-party contractor appointed by Forestal. This phase is expected to help assess both the technical feasibility and economic potential of the project.

Torsten Katz, Global Business Director for OASE Gas Treating Technologies at BASF, emphasized that this partnership with Forestal represents a significant opportunity to advance sustainable fuel production in the region.

“This partnership addresses the need for innovative solutions in carbon capture and utilization, marking a significant stride towards reducing global emissions. By collaborating with Forestal, we are setting the foundation for one of the first plants to produce e-methanol using our OASE technology,” Katz stated.

Andrés Fuentes, CEO of Forestal del Atlántico, commented, “By utilizing CO2 captured from our production processes, we are embracing a more sustainable approach to fuel production.”

This partnership is expected to provide valuable support for Forestal’s Triskelion project, which is designed to produce 156 metric tons of e-methanol daily. The fuel is considered a critical component of global decarbonization efforts, with the potential to scale up production to 40,000 tons annually.

The project is expected to become operational in January 2028.
