Baker Hughes has secured a contract from Saipem to provide CO2 compression systems for Eni’s Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in the UK. The deal reflects Baker Hughes’ continued expansion in the CCS market.

Under the agreement, Baker Hughes will deliver three electric motor-driven centrifugal compressor trains, along with gear systems from Lufkin Gears.

These units will support the transformation of the existing gas processing site at Point of Ayr in North Wales into a dedicated CO2 compression hub. The station will handle captured carbon for permanent injection into depleted offshore gas fields beneath Liverpool Bay.

This facility forms a key part of the broader HyNet Cluster — an integrated network designed to capture and transport carbon emissions from industrial sites across North West England and North Wales.

Once operational, the system will route CO2 through a mix of new and repurposed infrastructure to secure geological storage beneath the seabed. HyNet is one of the most advanced CCS hubs globally and is poised to play a major role in reducing regional industrial emissions.

This order adds to Baker Hughes’ growing list of CCS-related projects. In 2024, the company was chosen to supply critical power and compression systems for bp’s Tangguh UCC project in Indonesia, which supports enhanced gas recovery through carbon capture and storage.

That package included gas turbine generators, heat recovery steam generators, a steam turbine generator, and multiple feedstock gas compressors.

Additionally, Baker Hughes recently entered a strategic partnership with Frontier Infrastructure to accelerate CCS and low-carbon power deployment across the US.

The company’s CCUS capabilities span the full value chain — from advisory and front-end engineering to capture systems, compression, liquefaction, injection well design, and long-term site monitoring — positioning it as a key enabler in the global energy transition.

“We’re proud to support Saipem and Eni with our advanced, proven compression technologies in a critical project that will deliver sustainable energy development in the UK by decarbonizing industry,” said Alessandro Bresciani, senior vice president of Climate Technologies Solutions at Baker Hughes.
