Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has taken an early step toward deploying its SolveBright post-combustion carbon capture technology at an existing power plant in the United States, after receiving limited notice to proceed with engineering work and long-lead equipment procurement.

The company expects a full notice to proceed to be signed by March 2026. Once fully approved, the project is estimated to be worth approximately $80 million, with the potential for additional scope and construction-related services as development progresses.

The project will use B&W’s SolveBright system, a regenerable, solvent-based carbon dioxide capture solution designed for post-combustion applications.

According to the company, the system is capable of capturing and storing more than 550,000 tons of CO2 per year, making it suitable for large, baseload power generation facilities seeking to reduce their emissions footprint.

Flexible solvent design supports cost and operational efficiency

A key feature of the SolveBright design is its flexibility. B&W said the system can operate using either an advanced specialty solvent or more widely available commodity solvents, giving plant operators the ability to optimize performance and manage operating costs in response to market conditions. This flexibility is expected to support both long-term operational resilience and improved project economics.

Beyond this specific project, Babcock & Wilcox said it can support carbon capture installations across a wide range of scales, from early-stage feasibility assessments and plant surveys through to detailed engineering, commissioning, and start-up.

The company’s experience in flue gas treatment and environmental control technologies underpins its expansion into carbon capture applications.

Commenting on the project, Jimmy Morgan, B&W’s chief commercial officer, said the company sees growing demand for carbon capture solutions as electricity consumption rises, driven in part by the expansion of data centres and AI-related infrastructure across North America.

He added that B&W’s portfolio of power generation and environmental technologies positions it to support energy producers seeking flexible, low-carbon solutions using a broad range of fuels.
