Atal Solutions has launched a $123.7 million retrofitting project aimed at slashing emissions across the shipping sector.

In collaboration with Damen Shipyards Group, Blue Astra Maritime Shipping, and other partners, the initiative targets CO2, SOₓ, and NOₓ reductions while boosting fuel efficiency and nearly eliminating vessel waste.

Four ships are currently being upgraded in Istanbul, where early results show fuel savings of at least 25%.

Istanbul was chosen for its strategic location and the expertise of the Besiktas Group, which is overseeing the dry docking process expected to last around four weeks per vessel.

The project incorporates ten advanced technologies, including carbon capture systems, air lubrication for hull efficiency, closed-loop scrubbers, and energy-saving LEDs.

These upgrades are made possible through an innovative financing model covering 85% of costs through supplier credit — recently named one of GTR’s Best Deals of 2024.

“The shipping industry needs practical, immediate impact, and that’s exactly what we deliver. By making financing accessible, we’re proving that large-scale sustainability improvements are not only possible but also commercially viable,” said Edwin Sieswerda, Founder and Managing Director of Atal Solutions. “This isn’t just a one-off project; it’s a blueprint for the future of green shipping.”

As new regulations like the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) increase pressure on the maritime sector, Atal’s retrofitting approach offers a scalable path to compliance and long-term cost savings.

The initiative is designed not just to meet environmental targets, but to future-proof existing fleets amid tightening climate standards.
