Los Angeles-based climate finance firm Aspiration has announced a new partnership with global travel tech company Fareportal under which it will provide its proprietary solutions to allow travelers to estimate and mitigate their carbon footprint when planning their trips using Fareportal’s platforms.
Fareportal customers making flight, hotel, or car reservations through its platforms, including online travel agencies CheapOair and OneTravel, will soon be able to calculate their estimated carbon footprint thanks to Aspiration’s APIs and proprietary greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions methodologies.
As a second step, they will be offered the opportunity to reduce these emissions by participating in third-party reforestation programs backed by Aspiration’s rigorously reviewed, high-quality tree planting projects, according to the statement.

“Reducing travel isn’t always practical, so providing a seamless option in their booking platform to mitigate emissions provides an important tool in our shared goal to reduce climate impact,” Olivia Albrecht, CEO of Aspiration, said in a comment to the collaboration announcement.
According to Werner Georg Kunz-Cho, CEO of Fareportal, the partnership with Aspiration will allow their customers not only to make informed choices about their travel options, but also to take action to address the potential emissions.
Under the partnership, Aspiration will provide regular reporting to Fareportal, which processes millions of flight bookings on an annual basis, allowing them to track the total impact they and their customers have generated.
Based on historical booking data, Aspiration estimates that after the initial offering becomes available on Fareportal’s platforms transactions made through the end of 2023 will result in newly planted trees with capacity to effectively sequester between 80,000 and 320,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq).
