  • Arbon Earth secures permit to run seaweed-based mCDR operations in Indonesia
  • With this permit, the company will grow its portfolio of projects, adding to its existing operations in Kenya
  • The Arbon Earth team is also in talks with relevant authorities, negotiating expansion into additional regions

Swedish company Arbon Earth announced that it has secured a historic first permit from authorities in Indonesia to run its deep-sea marine carbon capture (mCDR) operations in this Asian country.

With the official regulatory approval at hand, Arbon Earth will expand its seaweed production capacity, growing its existing Kenya operations with new locations in Indonesia.

The Gothenburg-based climate tech company leverages the ocean’s natural CO2-absorbing capacity to accelerate the process of carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

Its approach includes cultivating seaweed that naturally soaks up atmospheric CO2 and then lowering the seaweed to the deep ocean floor, enabling large-scale CDR.

Arbon Earth CEO Nanna Stranne stated, “This permit enables a significantly higher production rate for us, allowing us to meet larger CO2 removal purchases from our customers. At Arbon Earth, we are convinced that the ocean will be a crucial part of the solution to the climate crisis.”

Arbon Earth is growing on a global level

With the secured permit, the company will be able to grow its operations into a real global network of projects.

Currently, Arbon Earth operates an active seaweed production site in Kenya, and soon, its team will begin testing at a new site off the coast of Lombok Island. Additionally, the company is already in negotiations with authorities on expanding this effort to other regions.

Looking ahead, Arbon Earth is collaborating with Indonesian authority KKP (Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries) on the gradual scale up of its operations, aligned with environmental integrity guidelines and striving for maximum climate impact.

Commenting on this collaboration, Mr. Muhammad Husnul Aini, PIC KKPRL at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, shared, “We welcome Arbon Earth’s innovative approach to ocean-based carbon removal. This collaboration aligns with our national commitment to climate action, sustainable marine management, and pioneering new blue economy initiatives in Indonesia.”

In a publication, Arbon Earth added, “Scaling ocean-based carbon dioxide removal requires both innovative science and regulatory support. Receiving this permit is a key milestone that enables us to take our operations to the next level.”
