Applied Carbon, a company pioneering automated biochar production machines, just announced a successful $21.5 million Series A funding round.
Led by TO VC, the investment includes contributions from prominent players like Congruent Ventures, Grantham Foundation, and Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund.
This funding will propel the deployment of a fleet of biochar machines across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, offering farmers a highly effective solution for carbon capture and improved soil health.
Applied Carbon, previously known as Climate Robotics, boasts a revolutionary on-site system that transforms leftover agricultural crop residues into biochar in a single, streamlined process.
This biochar is then reintroduced to the field, nurturing soil health, boosting agricultural productivity, and reducing the need for lime and fertilizers. Notably, it also serves as a long-lasting carbon capture and storage solution.
“Multiple independent studies indicate that converting crop waste into biochar has the potential to remove gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year, while creating trillions of dollars in value for the world’s farmers,” said Jason Aramburu, co-founder and CEO of Applied Carbon.

“However, there is no commercially available technology to convert these wastes at low cost. Applied Carbon’s patented in-field biochar production system is the first solution that can convert crop waste into biochar at a scale and a cost that makes sense for broad acre farming.”
This innovative technology utilizes a high-tech, self-contained trailer towed by a tractor, which collects crop residue, transforms it into biochar through a high-temperature process called pyrolysis, cools it with water, and then enriches it with nutrients and beneficial microbes according to the farmer’s specific needs.
The final biochar product is effortlessly spread directly onto the field, eliminating the need for bulk transportation and significantly reducing its per-ton cost.
Additionally, the system can operate efficiently at field edges, providing added flexibility for handling a wider variety of crop residues throughout the year.

Beyond agricultural benefits, Applied Carbon’s biochar presents a significant opportunity for carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
Research suggests that biochar offers one of the safest and most enduring methods for removing carbon from the atmosphere. In 2023, biochar accounted for over 90% of all commercially traded permanent CDR solutions, a trend expected to continue.
Applied Carbon’s technology, coupled with its advanced automation and data monitoring system, provides best-in-class carbon removal monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) – crucial aspects for transparent engagement with large-scale carbon removal buyers.
