OpenAir Collective – the entirely volunteer-led network that aims to actively contribute to climate change mitigation, has launched a student innovation challenge for carbon removal technologies with a deadline for applicants now extended to January 8th, 2023. Students willing to participate can apply here.

The competition called the 2023 OpenAir Carbon Removal Challenge is a worldwide challenge for students to create new processes, approaches and prototypes for carbon removal from the land, waters, or air.

The students will be offered guidance from researchers and industry experts while they develop their carbon removal solutions. The goal is for them to design and build creative, open-source solutions to the carbon pollution problem.

The best approaches will be selected for an in-person showcase at New York University in April 2023.

Carbon removal technologies are a base bone to scaling emissions reduction. The world would need to collect back the massive amounts of CO2 it has been releasing for decades in ambient air. To do that, carbon removal needs to be ramped up real quick so we could avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
