Adani Group’s Ambuja Cements has entered into a strategic partnership with UK-based technology provider Leilac Ltd to pioneer a commercial-scale, low-carbon cement manufacturing pathway in India.

The joint demonstration project, hosted at the Sanghipuram plant in Gujarat’s Kutch district, is set to test advanced carbon capture technology alongside hybrid electric heating methods. The initiative directly tackles the cement sector’s toughest environmental challenge: process emissions.

Because a significant portion of the industry’s carbon footprint is inherently generated by the chemical reaction during clinker production, rather than just fuel combustion, specialized carbon capture technology is increasingly viewed as an indispensable tool for meaningful decarbonization.

Targeting Zero Coal and Scalable Capture

The pilot project at the Sanghipuram facility aims to fundamentally restructure traditional manufacturing by integrating Leilac’s advanced direct separation carbon capture technology with hybrid electric heating.

This dual approach is designed to drastically cut process emissions while systematically reducing the facility’s reliance on conventional fossil fuels, with the ultimate objective of achieving zero coal consumption during the cycle.

If the pilot proves successful, the implications for the region’s industrial landscape are substantial. The partners intend to scale the system to capture more than 1 million metric tons of CO2 annually.

For Ambuja Cements, this initiative marks a critical milestone within its broader strategic roadmap, serving as a primary lever to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations by 2050.

By combining Leilac’s specialized capture mechanics with Ambuja’s extensive domestic infrastructure, the collaboration underscores a growing commitment among major Indian industrial players to deploy innovative, scalable solutions against hard-to-abate industrial emissions.
