AlliedOffsets and Sylvera unveiled on Wednesday their Quality-Weighted Carbon Price Index—a new index that integrates market pricing with project quality ratings, aiming to bring greater transparency to voluntary carbon markets (VCM).

The index is updated weekly and combines market transaction data with scientific assessments of project quality—marking a shift from traditional pricing benchmarks that reflect cost but not environmental effectiveness.

The carbon markets have long suffered from fragmented information, so the new index is designed to provide the transparency needed to foster trust, growth, and scalability, according to Lars Kroijer, CEO and co-founder of AlliedOffsets.

The index categorizes carbon offset projects using Sylvera’s proprietary quality scores, which range from “premium >BBB” to “standard <BB,” allowing buyers to track prices across various quality tiers.

Project types covered include afforestation and reforestation (ARR), improved forest management (IFM), REDD+ forest protection, and mangrove restoration.

Unlike conventional indicators, the new index is designed to serve as both a pricing tool and a quality benchmark, offering users a more comprehensive view of market dynamics.

“The aim here is not to create another price indicator – but build the foundation for a more intelligent carbon market,” Allister Furey, Sylvera’s CEO, explained.

The tool is accessible via both companies’ platforms, with advanced analytics available to paying users.

Data inputs include satellite imagery, field data, and regulatory records, all processed using Sylvera’s machine-learning models.

The launch comes amid growing corporate demand for higher-quality carbon credits, as businesses face increased scrutiny over the environmental credibility of their net-zero claims.
