Aker Solutions has secured a major contract for the second phase of the Northern Lights carbon storage initiative, awarded by Equinor, acting as the technical service provider on behalf of the Northern Lights joint venture.

Northern Lights Phase 1 is a key part of Norway’s Longship project, aimed at creating a comprehensive, full-scale system for CO2 capture, transportation, and storage.

With the completion of the first phase, the project is now set up to accept CO2 from both Norwegian and European industrial emitters.

Phase 2 will significantly expand the transport and storage capacity from 1.5 million metric tons to at least 5 million tons of CO2 annually, backed by funding from the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF Energy) program.

Aker Solutions will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the onshore infrastructure, involving teams at their facilities in Fornebu and Stord, Norway, as well as in Mumbai, India.

This contract underscores Aker Solutions’ role as a reliable partner with strong execution capabilities, building on the experience gained during Phase 1 of the project.

Work on the second phase is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2025, with completion expected by 2028.

Aker Solutions plans to recognize the contract in their order intake for the Renewables and Field Development segment in the first quarter of 2025.

“This contract is significant for Aker Solutions and aligns well with our strategy and ability to deliver standardized solutions for projects in the CCUS value chain,” Henrik Inadomi, Executive Vice President for New Energies at Aker Solutions, said.

“This is the fourth project with CO2 storage solutions which we are executing, and this journey has enabled us to continuously reduce costs. Northern Lights strengthens Norway’s position as a leader in CCS projects globally, and we are proud to be part of this important initiative.”
