The ONS 2024 conference in Stavanger saw the signing of an MOU between the four companies which will start work on a pilot project utilizing the novel Zero Emission Power Station (ZEUS) solution. The project will explore the potential of oxyfuel combustion for power generation with instant carbon capture.

“We’re excited to bring ZEUS to life alongside our partners. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our mission to solve energy challenges using innovative technology”, said Jo Krabbe, executive vice president of Power Solutions at Aker Solutions.

According to a statement by Aker Solutions oxyfuel combustion has the ability to convert natural gas with a high concentration of CO2 while capturing the latter and redirecting to storage or enhanced oil or gas recovery. If successful this could turn gas reserves that have been deemed to costly to develop into potentially profitable ones.

The main advantage of the ZEUS technology according to Aker is that it can create combustion at high pressure, significantly reducing the complexity and size of the neccessary processing equipment. More details are available in this company presentation from 2022.

The technology would operate through floating platforms (see main article image) which will be developed by the Malaysian Shipping Company (MISC), which has been working with Petronas and its subsidiaries on similar platforms for natural gas projects for a number of years.
