In another milestone for the Stockholm Exergi Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project, the company has chosen a groundbreaking CO2 liquefaction technology from Air Liquide.

Named Cryocap™ LQ, this state-of-the-art technology represents a significant addition to Air Liquide’s suite of proprietary technologies, facilitating the development of extensive Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) value chains. The CO₂ liquefaction solution enables the long-distance transportation of liquid CO2 to permanent carbon storage locations, enhancing the feasibility of CCS projects.

Philippe Merino, Group Vice President supervising Engineering & Construction at Air Liquide stated: “Cryocap™ LQ CO₂ liquefaction technology is a new addition to Air Liquide’s portfolio of low-carbon technologies, and is particularly suited to large scale CCS projects. In line with Air Liquide’s strategic plan ADVANCE, Air Liquide’s ambition is to contribute actively to the emergence of a low-carbon society.”

According to the agreement, Air Liquide will supply the CO2 liquefaction technology and equipment for the BECCS project at an existing biomass heat and power plant (bio-cogeneration) in Stockholm. The Cryocap™ LQ CO₂ liquefaction unit provided by Air Liquide will be among the largest globally, with a capacity of 3,500 tonnes per day.

The BECCS facility aims to liquefy and store approximately eight million tonnes of biogenic CO₂ in its first decade of operation. This project is backed by the European Innovation Fund, one of the largest programs globally supporting innovative low-carbon technologies.

Air Liquide’s Cryocap™ LQ technology, showcasing the company’s expertise in cryogenics, is notable for its chemical-free, non-flammable process and compact design. This advanced system will also enable the recovery and reuse of heat generated during the process to supply Stockholm’s district heating network. These features enhance sustainability and safety, offering superior energy efficiency compared to traditional liquefaction methods.
