ADM has begun operations at a major new carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at its Corn Processing Complex in Columbus, Nebraska, establishing the world’s largest bioethanol carbon capture facility.

The project connects ADM’s Columbus plant to Tallgrass’ Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub via the Trailblazer pipeline, enabling the permanent underground storage of captured CO2.

The collaboration expands ADM’s decade-long leadership in CCS and underscores its strategy to decarbonize operations while supplying low-carbon bio-based ingredients.

“CCS is an important part of our strategy to decarbonize our operations and help meet global demand for low-carbon ingredients,” said Chris Cuddy, president, North America at ADM.

“We are proud to work with Tallgrass to find innovative solutions at facilities like Columbus. This is an exciting project for the industry and for the future of CCS technology.”

Transforming Legacy Infrastructure for Climate Solutions

The Trailblazer pipeline, once a 400-mile natural gas transmission system, now runs through Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska and can transport over 10 million tons of CO2 annually.

A newly built lateral line links ADM’s facility to the pipeline, developed entirely through voluntary landowner easements. The Tallgrass Eastern Wyoming Hub will store CO2 deep underground, providing a scalable model for industrial carbon management across the Midwest.

“This project proves that global impact grows from local roots,” said Alison Nelson, segment president of CO2 business development and origination at Tallgrass. “We’re proud to stand with ADM in achieving this milestone.”

The project marks another step toward large-scale CCS integration in US biofuel production, positioning the Midwest as a growing center for carbon storage and infrastructure innovation.
