Climate tech company A Healthier Earth has partnered with German company PYREG to deliver the UK’s largest biochar facility.

The planned facility will have the capacity to remove 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, producing 9,000 tonnes of biochar annually.

Biochar production technology utilizes waste from landfills that would otherwise be burned, which would lead to further carbon emissions released into the atmosphere.

With the process of pyrolysis, organic waste like biomass is heated in a low-oxygen environment, turning up to 90% of the carbon dioxide from the original material into solid-form carbon, offering a permanent CO2 sequestration technology.

A Healthier Earth and PYREG plan to develop a large-scale biochar facility in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, that is set to be operational from the beginning of 2025.

Using local organic waste, the facility will produce biochar with multiple global uses and environmental benefits like soil improvement, water filtration, and decarbonized construction materials.

A Healthier Earth, a subsidiary of Pure DC Group, will be the first client to utilize PYREG’s scaled PX6000 pyrolysis machine. The partnership between the two companies will also see the new biochar facility using the PX1500 and P500 machines developed by PYREG.

In the initial stage of the long-term partnership, A Healthier Earth and PYREG will employ the first PX6000 pyrolysis machine in production, with the option to preferentially obtain three more machines of the same kind in the future, a possibility that would enable A Healthier Earth to rapidly scale its operations.

Taking advantage of the magnitude of the new production site, in the next three years A Healthier Earth will ramp up its biochar production, generating high-integrity carbon credits that will be offered for sale on the market.

A Healthier Earth Chief R&D Officer Alastair Collier pointed out that biochar is still struggling to reach the scale needed for impactful climate action. With this partnership with PYREG the company is confident it will manage to sequester significant and meaningful amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.
