Carbon credits are increasingly treated as strategic business investments rather than mere compliance costs, with 90% of buyers reporting that credit purchases met or exceeded corporate goals over the past 12 months, according to new research from Climate Impact Partners.

The study, which surveyed 600 senior climate decision-makers across the US and UK, reveals that carbon credits are generating tangible commercial returns alongside environmental metrics. Current buyers cited clear commercial benefits, including enhanced brand trust (38%), revenue growth (37%), improved brand reputation (36%), and accelerated customer acquisition (35%).

Overall, 81% of respondents using or planning to use carbon credits classified them as important or critical to achieving their immediate climate goals.

Executive Engagement Rises as Buyers Prioritize Quality

As voluntary carbon markets mature, purchasing decisions are moving into C-suite and board-level discussions.

The survey found an average of 2.4 internal stakeholders participating in each transaction, with 43% reporting direct CEO involvement. Board participation nearly doubled between prospective and active buyers, rising from 22% to 40%, while CFO oversight increased from 22% to 32%.

This executive elevation is driving a shift toward quality over cost. Among active buyers, 84% stated that project quality takes precedence over price, while only 7% prioritized cost savings.
