44.01 – the carbon mineralization technology company, has agreed a concession with Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals to carry out its first commercial-scale peridotite mineralization project which will begin in 2024 in the Hajar mountains.

The project will represent the first commercial demonstration to mineralize CO2 in peridotite rocks. It involves using 44.01’s technology that locks CO2 captured from the atmosphere into the ground.

The process starts with the captured CO2 getting dissolved in water and then injected into peridotite formations deep underground, where it will mineralize, or turn into rock. Peridotite is an ultramafic rock that is abundant in Oman. It mineralizes CO2 naturally in several decades. However, 44.01’s technology accelerates the process and achieves CO2 mineralization in less than one year.

“44.01’s mineralization technology, developed here in Oman, has the potential to help our country meet its net zero targets and decarbonize vital Omani industries in line with His Majesty’s Vision 2040. We are pleased to support 44.01 in its largest project so far and we look forward to seeing what this technology can achieve in the future,” commented on the concession agreement H.E. Eng. Salim bin Nasser bin Said Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals.
