Boulder, Colorado-based 1089 Inc has been appointed as an official U.S. Sub-Registry licensee for the Global Carbon Registry (GCR), a move the company says marks a significant step toward building institutional-grade infrastructure for the voluntary carbon market (VCM).
The announcement, made earlier this week, comes after the first issuance of 1089 Inc’s novel class of insured, biofuels-linked carbon credits—the CX89 Advanced Fuels Credits.
These credits are generated from data audited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and recorded on immutable blockchain infrastructure, combining regulatory data sourcing with tamper-proof traceability.
They have been listed on Carbon Trade Exchange (CTX) and are also available for direct over-the-counter transactions.
The framework for the CX89 Advanced Fuels Credits, which incorporates insurance coverage as a risk mitigation layer, was developed in collaboration with carbon insurer Oka and Price Forbes.
This feature is positioned by 1089 Inc as a new benchmark for credit integrity, alongside audited data foundations and efficient transaction pathways.
“The stability and security of carbon credits as offsets begins with trusted infrastructure. Market evolution means aligning with credible, globally recognized platforms, and efficient proven trading solutions,” said Wayne Sharpe, CEO of Global Carbon Registry.

Global Environment Markets (GEM), a further participant in the framework, provides technology infrastructure designed to enable compliant, transparent carbon credit transactions across international markets.
Together, the GCR registry infrastructure and CTX market access are intended to provide entry to a carbon asset class structured for institutional buyers and designed to scale across the transportation and energy sectors.
1089 Inc’s approach requires credits to derive from fully operational, scientifically validated projects, supported by third-party audited verification processes and aligned with established regulatory standards.
